The possible rewards that can result from exploring the seas for new lands is finding resources, encountering other people from different regions (trade and alliances), bringing back lots of resources, fame and fortune, discovering new lands which will expand the nation and increase resources.
What are the risks involved in embarking on a voyage into the unknown?
The risks in embarking in a voyage into the unknown are adopting various diseases form the unknown place, dangers in the voyage conflicts with another cultures and attracting other cultures into attacking the country. Not only that, the voyage it self is risking the person's own lives.
What will you do if you actually run into other people?
If I ran into other people, I would keep distance and observe to see whether the person is dangerous or not. Each cultures have different tradition, languages and beliefs. If there are any misunderstandings, or if I offended the other people, there could be serious consequences and there could be life threatening problems. In addition, it is extremely challenging to communicate with people that you have never met before. However, after a bit of observation, I might also try to make peace as it can give positive results like trading.
The compass played an important role in being a helpful technology in voyages. During the 10th century the compass was brought to Europe, from China. It allowed the ships to move in the direction that the voyager's chose to follow. The compass was credited as a helpful took in the Columbus's voyage. Because the earth is like a giant magnet, the earth's magnetic fields allowed the compass to navigate directions.

Therefore, this voyage will open up connections with the areas in Asia and possibly benefit Europe. However, there would be a risk as the asians might misunderstand the purpose as the voyage. (Asians might think the Europeans want to dominate their area)

- African slavery started when the Europeans saw the Africans as vulnerable and weak people.
- Africans have highly developed farming skills.
- Africans are less likely to run away as they are not aware of the new land.

-Using this trade route, many Europeans captured Africans and made them slaves.
